Urgent lift-and-shift migration to AWS

The customer previously used infrastructure hosted in two data centers managed by a 3rd-party provider. Serious incidents affected the provider and disrupted the operation of the money transfer service. It became clear that migrating the entire infrastructure to a trusted public cloud provider was the only way to ensure the continuous operation of the customer’s money transfer service. However, there was no time to rework the application or database software layers. Lift-and-shift was the only feasible approach. 

Escala springs into action

Escala 24×7 was already engaged with the client, hosting its backups in AWS, and knew the cloud would serve these purposes well. Escala’s team drew upon a wealth of experience migrating client infrastructure to AWS. The challenge came when Ronald Blanco, Escala 24×7’s Cloud Architect, realized that Oracle RAC requires an additional solution to operate in AWS. 

How to run Oracle RAC on AWS

The customer used Oracle RAC as the database backbone for the money transfer service application. It was the only HA architecture that would enable the required uptime of the database and the entire service. Escala 24×7 and the customer considered a few options but quickly realized FlashGrid was the only viable route to implement Oracle RAC on AWS.

He collaborated with in-house DBAs to achieve the appropriate configuration, and security experts from both companies carefully analyzed the architecture. Escala 24x7and the customer decided to spread the RAC database nodes across AWS availability zones to ensure continuous service operation in case of a data center outage. 

It wasn’t long before the team had moved their Oracle databases to the cloud. The migration took only two months, from project kick-off to being live in production. Making improvements while live in production

The client also grew and shrank the infrastructure until they achieved an ideal cost/performance balance using smaller, more cost-effective instance types.
